1. Intro to Anthropology - Ch 1
a) Watch exploring different cultures video. - 14 min
In your notes answer the following:
i) What did you learn from watching this video, that you didn’t know before?
ii) Why is it important to study various cultures?

a) Read Pages 18-21
Create your own note outlining the following points and how/why they're used:
i) Cultural Anthropology (define)
ii) Unstructured interviews
iii) Semi-structured interviews
iv) Structured interviews
v) Counting people, Photographs and Mapping
b) With a partner, complete question #1 from “Reflect and Respond” at the bottom of page 19. Write your predictions in your notes.

i) Define ethnology in your notes.
i) Youth Perspectives: Discuss questions 1-3 from page 23, on "Canadian Culture" with a partner.

4. Schools of Thought in Cultural Anthropology
...... What is a school of thought?
i) Cultural Relativism - states that an anthropologist cannot compare two cultures because each culture has it's own internal rules that must be followed
- everyone sees other cultures through the lens of their own
ii) Functional Theory - is the belief that every action, or relationship in a culture functions to meet the needs of individuals
- stressing the importance of interdependence among ALL things
iii) Cultural Materialism - states that materials or conditions within the environment influence how a culture develops
- if something is not of value to a society, it will disappear altogether
iv) Feminist Anthropology - making sure women's voices were heard
- comparing gender roles among cultures
v) Postmodernism - believe that it's impossible to have any "true" knowledge of the world
- what we know is our own construction
- don't think anthropologists can study subjects in an objective way
- everyone sees other cultures through the lens of their own
